These photos allow our technical support staff to spot issues that may not be obvious from a description alone.

Using the correct terminology will help you get faster and more accurate support.

Pipes (Combustion)

The smaller corrugated pipes (22mm on HS2000/HS2211, 26mm on HS2800) connecting to the combustion intake and exhaust fittings on the bottom of the unit. Must never be shorter than 1 meter (~40 inches).

Ducts / Ducting (Cabin Air)

The larger corrugated ducting (60mm on HS2000/HS2211, 76mm on HS2800) that carries ambient cabin air across the heat exchanger and delivers warm air back into the cabin.

Tubing (Propane)

The propane delivery line from your regulator to the heater. The propane fitting is a 1/4” compression fitting — requires tubing with an exact 1/4” outside diameter.

HS2000 and HS2800: One year from purchase
HS2211: Three years from purchase

Important: Van Cafe is the US distributor for Propex. Technical support and warranty service are only available for heaters purchased in the United States. For heaters purchased outside the US, contact the distributor in your country.

Your Propex comes with an analog thermostat — a knob to control heat output. An upgraded digital thermostat is also available, allowing you to set an exact target temperature. On US-spec gas-only models, the digital thermostat includes a 1–16 hour countdown timer.

⚠️ Important: BEFORE connecting the heater to the 12V battery, the controller (thermostat) MUST be connected to the Propex unit first. Connect the controller, then the 12V power. Reversing this order may blow an internal fuse. A replacement 2A slow-blow fuse is available on our website.

• Never trim the pipes. Trimming disrupts combustion balance and will cause malfunction or premature failure.
• The exhaust pipe must have a constant downward slope so condensation drains out and doesn’t restrict airflow.
• The intake and exhaust pipe terminations must be at least 0.5 meters (1.5 ft) apart to prevent exhaust air from recirculating into the intake.
• The exhaust pipe must terminate beyond the outside edge of the vehicle and face toward the rear. Carbon monoxide is heavier than air and pools under the vehicle — improper routing risks CO entering through the floor. A CO detector is strongly recommended.

Minimum required pipe length: 1 meter (~40 inches)

Install hot air outlets at floor level — heat rises, and floor-level outlets provide the most even and efficient heat distribution.

• Maximum 3 hot air outlets per heater
• Maximum length to the first outlet: 1.5 meters (4.5 ft)
• Total combined cabin ducting length must not exceed 5 meters (15 ft)

Apply a small amount of dielectric grease on the female side of each electrical connector to prevent oxidation and corrosion. Do not get grease on the metal terminals — it is non-conductive.

If your propane system currently uses a single-stage regulator, replace it with a two-stage regulator. A two-stage regulator delivers more consistent pressure across changes in elevation. Use an 11” water column regulator for efficient gas flow.

Note: Faulty regulators are one of the most common causes of Propex issues we encounter.

⚠️ Important: The compression fitting supplied with the heater is BSPT thread — this is NOT the same as standard US 1/4” NPT fittings. Do not substitute US NPT fittings or you will have a gas leak.

Alternate BSPT fittings can be sourced from McMaster-Carr.

Use 1/4” copper tubing to run propane from the tank to the heater. The Propex compression fitting is designed to work directly with 1/4” OD copper tubing.

We also sell a complete Propex installation kit for VW Vanagon Westfalia that includes copper tubing and a four-way connector — it works on any build.

When the heater encounters conditions outside safe operating parameters, the circuit board may throw a fault code. To reset:

1. Turn the thermostat temperature knob to full hot
2. Turn the operation dial: OFF → FAN → FLAME
3. Then back: FLAME → FAN → OFF
4. Then again: OFF → FAN → FLAME

⚠️ The speed of each turn is critical — approximately one second per step. Watch the fault code reset video on YouTube for the correct timing.
