Magnum FAQ

MAGNUM BIKES

01. How do I register my bike and activate my warranty?

All bikes in Magnum's current lineup* come with a two-year manufacturer's warranty. Outlet bikes, including our certified pre-owned bikes, come with a one-year manufacturer's warranty.

To register your bike and activate your warranty, please complete our form by clicking here. Once you submit it, you will be redirected to purchase Extended Warranty and Accident Coverage through SureBright.

You will need to submit your unique serial number in order for your warranty activation to be valid in our system. The bike serial number is located on the frame (on the front of the stem tube below Magnum logo).

You'll find a video here that shows you how to find the numbers on each of these parts. You will also need the following purchase information: Name of the retailer you purchased from and date of purchase

02. If I get a punctured tire, do I have to go to an e-bike specialist to get it fixed?

While we recommend seeing a Magnum dealer for most repairs, changing a flat can be done by the home mechanic with the right tools and guidance.  It simply involves removing the wheel from the bike, removing the tube from inside the tire, ensuring no thorns or glass are protruding from the inside of the tire, and installing a new tube.  Then, reinstall the wheel on the bike in the same configuration it was in before removal.  It is vital to torque the axle to adequate spec to avoid injury and damage to your ebike.

Front tires are easier to repair than rear tires, due to the rear hub motor found on most Magnum bikes.  The rear hub motor must be removed and reinstalled with care, due to the no-turn washers that ensure the torque of the motor doesn't damage the aluminum dropouts on the bike frame. It is important to take note of how the no-turn washers are situated and replicate that layout when reinstalling.  Some no-turn washers install inside the dropouts of the frame, and some install on the outside. If you are hesitant, it may be beneficial to have the work done by a professional bike mechanic. You can find full instructions in our Magnum Academy article, How To Remove And Reinstall The Rear Wheel On Your E-Bike.

03. How do I fix a pedal that popped off and has stripped threads?

Materials Needed for Repair

  1. Crank arm puller tool (specific for your bike model)

  2. Allen wrench or compatible pedal wrench

  3. Replacement crank and/or pedal (if threads are severely damaged)

  4. Thread repair kit or professional shop assistance (optional)

Step-by-Step Repair Instructions

  1. Remove the damaged pedal by loosening it with an Allen wrench or pedal wrench, turning it counterclockwise on the right side and clockwise on the left side.

  2. Use the crank arm puller tool to carefully remove the crank arm from the bike’s bottom bracket. This tool prevents further damage to threads and crank components.

  3. Inspect the threads on the crank arm. If the peeling or damage is superficial, clean the threads and apply grease before reinstalling the pedal.

  4. For severely damaged threads, consider using a thread repair kit or replacing the crank arm. Magnum Bikes recommends visiting an authorized dealer or professional bike shop for this service to ensure safety and performance.

  5. After repairs, reinstall the crank arm using the crank arm puller tool in reverse, then securely fasten the pedal, applying appropriate torque specifications.

Tips and Best Practices

07. How can I see the display while riding at night?

You can activate the backlight on your LCD display to see it at night. To do so, power on your display, and then press the power button once more. This will light the backlight; now you're ready to ride!

08. Can I get replacement keys for my battery?

We only sell keys as a set with new lock mechanisms. For security reasons, we don't keep stock of single keys. This means that if you lose your battery keys, you'll need to get a new lock along with new keys.

To request a new battery lock, please submit a service request here.

09. What do the terms volts, amps, and watts mean for my e-bike?

Your e-bike has an electric system that is measured by volts and amps.

Volts: Voltage is the amount of potential electricity your battery holds. In general, the voltage of your battery doesn’t increase or decrease.

Amps: Amps, or current, refer to how quickly your battery draws electricity during use. You use more amps (and deplete your e-bike battery faster) when riding…

  1. With a heavy load

  2. Uphill

  3. On bumpy and grassy terrain

Watts: Your e-bike battery watts are a measure of the output of power that your e-bike can provide. You can calculate your watts when you know the voltage and amps of your battery.

  1. Voltage x Amps = Watts

A 350-watt system can put out up to about 600 watts at peak, but will provide 350 watts of power when riding under normal conditions. The rated power of your e-bike will affect the speed and or torque depending on the configuration.

10. How long will my Magnum Bikes battery last me?

All Magnum e-bikes come with a lithium battery. You will typically get 800-1000 charge cycles out of your battery, as long as you are storing it appropriately.

With Magnum Bikes batteries, you can charge and discharge the battery completely 800-1000 times before the capacity depletes to 80% efficiency. Even at that point, your battery is still powerful enough to keep you riding, but you can replace it whenever you'd like.

To ensure you get the full 800-1000 charge cycles, take care of your battery by: Storing it indoors and out of extreme hot or cold temperatures, Charging it when it gets down to one power bar remaining, instead of letting it discharge completely

11. How long does it take to re-charge my battery?

All Magnum Bikes batteries have different charge times based on their size and capacity. To charge a fully discharged Magnum battery up to 100% charge, the average recharge time is approximately 6-8 hours. You will notice the bike charges fastest when going from 0% to 80%, then takes a little longer to get from 80% to 100%.

12. How do I take care of my Magnum Bikes battery?

Our top tips for e-bike battery care: Always pedal along with your e-bike, especially up hills so the battery is not depleted too quickly.  Always keep your battery charged. Lithium batteries' life cycles can be extended by not depleting your battery fully. Even if you have not depleted your battery entirely during your ride, we suggest that you charge it after use.  Do not overcharge your battery. Be sure not to leave your battery charging for more than 24 hours at a time.  Keep your battery out of extreme hot or cold temperatures.  Store your battery indoors; keep it out of the rain or snow.

13. What is the weight limit of a Magnum Bike?

Weight limits vary for different models of Magnum Bikes. Here are the weight limits for each model.

Payload: ~350 lbs

Navigator, Ranger, Summit, Navigator, Cruiser, Lowrider, Metro, Metro+, Peak, Pathfinder, Ui6, Ui6+, Mi6, Ui5, Mi5: ~ 265 lbs

Premium II, Classic II, Premium, Classic: ~ 242 lbs

Cosmo, Cosmo+, Cosmo S, Cosmo X: ~ 220 lbs

14. What car rack is recommended to use with Magnum Bikes?

Our e-bikes are made to fit most standard car racks. E-bikes are heavier than regular pedal bikes, so we recommend a rack that is rated to hold at least 60lbs for a single e-bike — more if you have more than one bike.

When transporting your e-bike on a car rack, we recommend taking your battery out. This reduces the chance of battery loss during transit; it also takes 7-10 lbs. of weight off the bike.

When looking for specific bike racks for your car, we recommend a tray style. Kuat brand car racks work well with Magnum Bikes.

15. What bike trailer do you recommend using with Magnum Bikes?

Whether you're hauling kids, gear, or pets, trailers are a great accessory for any bike. Magnum Bikes work with BURLEY trailers when using the updated hitch that fits over 12mm solid axles.

There may be other brands or designs that will work, such as some Seatpost mounting options. However, the 12mm compatible trailer hitches are the only ones we have tested and are therefore the only ones we can safely recommend.

Please note: it is vital for both safety and warranty coverage that you compensate for the width of the trailer hitch by removing a circular washer on the side of your bike opposite the rear hub drive (where you would install the adapter).

In addition, the axle nuts and no-turn washers must still be installed correctly and tightened according to spec (tight!)

16. What's the difference between mechanical ad hydraulic disc brakes?

With both mechanical and hydraulic brakes, a rider slows and stops their e-bike by activating the brake, pressing brake pads against part of the bike’s wheel to slow its rotation.

But while both options perform better than traditional rim brakes, particularly in wet conditions, mechanical disc brakes struggle to match the efficiency of hydraulic systems. There are other differences to be aware of, too.

Here are the key differences in mechanical vs. hydraulic disc brakes on e-bikes:

Mechanical

Hydraulic

1. Braking Mechanism

Pressing the brake lever generates force onto cables, which squeezes the brake pads & stops the bike

Pressing the brake lever expels brake fluid through hoses, which squeezes the brake pads & stops the bike

2. Responsiveness

Force applied to the brake lever is equal to the force applied to the brake

Force applied to the brake lever is multiplied by the force of the brake fluid, increasing overall force delivered to the brake

3. Weight

Typically lighter weight

Typically heavier weight

4. Maintenance

Regular maintenance is required for optimal performance; ok for a home mechanic

Minimal maintenance is required; ok for an experienced home mechanic, but best handled by a bike shop or dealer

16. My e-bike battery is not charging. What should I do?

If your battery fails to charge, the issue could lie with your charger, the outlet it’s plugged into, or with the battery itself. Follow these troubleshooting steps to better assess the issue.

First, check that the charger is operating properly. The specs and operation of your charger can be found in your manual in the Battery Charging and Maintenance section.  Most Magnum chargers have an LED light that should turn green when plugged into the wall, and turn red when charging a battery.

If the charger is not operating correctly, try using a different outlet.

If your charger is still NOT working and the LED doesn’t even light up green:

  1. Contact customer support at info@magnumbikes.com to check if you are still under warranty. If you are within the warranty period, Magnum will ship a new charger to you.

  2. If your warranty has expired, you can purchase a new charger here.

  3. If the charger you need is not available online, please contact Customer Support and they can assist in facilitating an order for you.

If your charger IS working, but your battery still won't charge:

We recommend using a voltage meter to test if the battery is in good health. If the voltage reads below the minimum voltage of your battery, this is an indicator that the battery is in low voltage mode and may need replacing.

If you do not have access to a voltage meter, contact a local Magnum dealer or bring the battery to a local mechanic shop to have it tested. Also, automotive parts stores will often take a voltage reading for free.

If your battery is dead:

  1. Contact customer support at info@magnumbikes.com to check if you are still under warranty. If you are we will ship you a free replacement.

  2. If your warranty has expired you can purchase a new battery here.

  3. If the battery you need is not available online, please contact Customer Support and they can assist in facilitating an order for you.

If your charger and battery indicate good health:

There could be a charging fuse that has tripped and can be replaced.  This is easily done if the fuse is on the outside of the battery.  Look for a silicone plug or door that says “fuse” on the outside of the battery.  If none is found, then the fuse may be inside the battery.  Opening the battery casing and checking the fuse should only be done by a trained professional.  Please contact Customer Support to troubleshoot further.

17. Throttle is not working on my bike, but pedal assist is functioning.

When the throttle on your electric bike fails to respond while the pedal assist continues to function, it usually indicates a specific throttle component issue rather than a system-wide failure.

Signs

  1. Throttle does not engage or power the motor when activated.

  2. Pedal assist activates the motor normally when pedaling.

  3. No error codes displayed on the VeloFox or Das-Kit LCD display related to motor or battery.

Recommended Solution: Throttle Inspection/Replacement

Based on our diagnosis, your bike's throttle component appears to be malfunctioning.  This can be caused by a throttle that is simply too close to other components, especially with thumb throttles.  Visually inspect your throttle and make sure it is not getting caught on another component on the handlebar, like a shifter or bell.  It can be necessary to loosen the throttle clamp bolt or screw and slide it away so it can function freely.  If your throttle seems to engage without getting stuck on another component, inspect the throttle cable and pins (unplug from display/cable tree).  If any pins are missing, bent, or damaged, a throttle replacement is suggested.  It can also be necessary to replace the component the throttle plugs into, usually the display or cable tree.  Visually inspect the adjacent cables and plugs and make sure no holes are crimped shut, or pins bent.  IMPORTANT: If one of your electrical connections is damaged, don't plug it into another component, or you risk spreading the damage to good components.

If you were shipped a new throttle, cable tree, or other component, you can either visit one of our authorized dealers for professional installation or follow the "Throttle Replacement How-To Guide" available in our Help Center for step-by-step instructions.

18. How can I see the display while riding at night?

You can activate the backlight on your LCD display to see it at night. To do so, power on your display, and then press the power button once more. This will light the backlight; now you're ready to ride!

19. Where can I find my frame number?

You will need your frame number when registering for your warranty.

The frame number is typically stamped into the head tube. In the rare event that it is not, there is also a sticker with a barcode on it — beneath that barcode, you will also find your frame number.

You can find a video here that demonstrates how to find your frame number.

20. Can I ride off-road with my Magnum Bikes e-bike?

The Magnum Summit, Peak T5, and Peak T7 are all mountain e-bikes. They are made for both off and on-road terrain.

The Magnum Nomad and Scout are both fat tire bikes. They are made for both off and on-road terrain. Our discontinued models Magnum Mi5 and Leisger MD5 are also mountain e-bikes. They are made for both off and on-road terrain. We no longer sell these models.

All other models have the capability to ride on easy to intermediate rail trails, but not all off-road trails

We strongly caution against jumping and rough riding with your e-bike.

Please note: Off-road riding will consume more energy from your battery and limit the range of your e-bike.

21. How do I fix a pedal that popped off and has stripped threads?

If your pedal has popped off and the threads on the crank arm are stripped or damaged, it is important to address this issue promptly to ensure safe riding and proper bike function. This guide provides expert steps to help you handle this repair effectively.

Damaged or peeling threads on the crank arm can cause the pedal to loosen, reducing safety and potentially damaging more components. Fixing this promptly maintains bike reliability and performance, foundational values at Magnum Bikes.

Materials Needed:

  1. Always apply a thin layer of grease to pedal threads when installing to prevent seizing and corrosion.

  2. Regularly inspect pedals and crank arms for wear or damage as part of routine maintenance.

  3. If unsure about performing this repair, visit your nearest Magnum Bikes authorized dealer for professional assistance.

22. My e-bike motor is turned on, but it's not engaging. What should I do?

First, check your motor's connection cables. Make sure they're all secure.

Next, unplug the motor cutoffs from your cable tree. If the motor engages, the motor cutoffs are not operating properly and may need to be replaced.

To replace your motor cutoffs, call our Customer Support Team at 323-375-2666.

23. How does the motor work with the mechanical gears of the electric bike?

Your Magnum e-bike comes with a rear hub geared motor. The motor has its own internal planetary gear transmission.

The mechanical gears on your e-bike are externally attached to the motor wheel; this is what allows your e-bike's pedal-assist system (PAS) to translate your pedaling power into motor assistance.

Using the correct mechanical gears during your ride is important since your PAS will move your e-bike quickly and powerfully, exacerbating the effect of incorrect gear selection.

Take care to avoid cross-chaining as you shift into the right gears, too. For more on cross-chaining, see our Magnum Academy article, Dropped Chain On E-Bikes: Causes, Fixes, And Prevention.
